Understanding the Canadian Government System

The Canadian government system is a federal constitutional parliamentary monarchy. This means the head of state is the monarch of the United Kingdom (currently King Charles III), represented in Canada by the Governor General.

Executive Power

Executive power is exercised by the Cabinet, made up of the Prime Minister and their ministers. The Prime Minister is usually the leader of the party that holds the most seats in the House of Commons.

Legislative Power

Legislative power is exercised by Parliament, which is bicameral:

  • House of Commons: members are elected.
  • Senate: members are appointed.

Judicial Power

Judicial power is independent and interprets the laws. The Supreme Court of Canada is the highest court in the land.

Understanding these three branches of power (executive, legislative, and judicial) is essential to pass your citizenship exam.
